4 Witney, William N.
1915-2002En sus inicios profesionales, a mediados de los anos 30, Witney hizo un poco de todo: fue montador, ayudante de direccion e, incluso, guionista, pero a partir de 1937 se dedico a la realizacion, convirtiendose en uno de los directores prolificos de Hollywood, en este caso para la productora Republic. En sus primeros anos como realizador, se especializo en seriales realizados en colaboracion, en particular con John English. La division del trabajo era sencilla: este rodaba las escenas de dialogo y los interiores, y Witney las escenas de accion. De este modo, fue adquiriendo justa fama como director de peliculas de accion, con grandes peleas y largas cabalgadas. Aunque la parte mas extensa de su filmografia la ocupan los westerns, es justo reconocer su labor en otros filmes de accion como Aventuras del capitan Maravillas (Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941), se rial realizado con el ya citado John English. Como al gunos otros de sus companeros, sirvio extensamente a estrellas del western, en este caso Roy Rogers y Rex Allen. 5 Kane, Joseph
1894-1975El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. Entre 1934 y 1975 trabaja en no menos de 120 peliculas, la inmensa mayoria de las cuales pertenecen al genero que nos ocupa. Trabaja con Gene Autry, John Wayne, Robert Livingston, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliott, en tre otros. Despues dirigira algunos episodios de se ries de television y otras cuatro peliculas. 1896-1975Nacido en Brookline, Massachusetts, William A Well man deja los estudios secundarios para jugar como profesional en un equipo de hockey sobre hielo. Con posterioridad, lo encontramos alistado en la Legion Extranjera Fran cesa y, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, como as de la aviacion. Despues de un encuentro accidental con Douglas Fairbanks entra en el mundo del cine. Pronto, en 1923, empieza a dirigir, sobre todo westerns, hasta que su pelicula Alas (Wings, 1927), en la que tiene ocasion de plasmar, casi de modo autobiografico, sus conocimientos del universo de la aviacion, le proporciona un enorme exito y, por anadidura, el primer Oscar a la Mejor Pelicula.En los anos treinta es el responsable de filmes violentos y controvertidos como The Public Enemy (1931). Wellman es uno de los ilustres pioneros de Hollywood, y de nuevo, ese personaje es alguien importante en el mundo del western. Cultivo con brillantez la comedia (La reina de Nueva York, Nothing Sacred, 1937), el genero belico (Lafayette Escadrille, 1958), el filme de aventuras (Beau Geste, 1939) y el drama (Ha nacido una estrella, A Star is Born, 1937), primera version del clasico que volveria a rodar, en los anos cincuenta, George Cukor. Cielo amarillo, por su parte, nos cautiva con sus ecos shakespeareanos; al fin y al cabo, no deja de ser una transposicion de “La tempestad” al mundo inclemente del desierto, que encierra en su interior una ciudad fantasma como si fuera una isla.
